This is the Act 1 backdrop. I used some real slogans from the Occupy
demos from Zuccotti Park and Union Square.

This is the second act backdrop, based on the hit show “Madmen”.

HAPPY PRESIDENT’S DAY 2012
published in the Wall Street Journal February 18/2012.

I just illustrated Peggy Noonan's article where she created a negative attack ad against Abraham Lincoln, endorsed by his political opponent, Steven Douglas. She writes in this article that “ Attack ads are the dreck of democracy.”.
I'm a huge Abraham Lincoln fan, however, I had to portray him as little “cockeyed” for her article.
I’ve been strangely drawn to the entertainment value of some of the recent Republican T.V. debates. I’m also shocked at
how much money these millionaires spend on these negative ads.

In 1980, the INX syndicate was created by 12 artists who worked in the New
York Times bullpen. While waiting for our various approvals and deadlines,
we became friends. We all wanted our own ideas published in our own
artist run syndication. After 3 years, some of the original members left and
we were taken by the United Features Syndicate in the old Pan Am build-
ing for 19 years. In 2002 INX launched its own website http://www.inxart.com
On February 4th I attended the INX Syndicate show at the Frostburg State
University in the far western Maryland. With Professor Thomas Kerr from
St John’s University’s former student, Jamison Odine was the curator. Our
Art Director, Martin Koslowski, couldn’t make the show due to the flu.
designed the commemorate 30 years of INX book.

I spent little time coming up with this concept for this weeks INX drawing. It’s
too obvious after Newt Gingrich mentioned an American Space Colony on the
moon in an earlier debate. The Malies image from his early silent movie “A Trip
to the Moon” immediatly popped into Martin Kozlowski’s and my head as we
were discussing this week’s INX drawing.

In the Florida debate Ron Paul joked about sending some politicians into
outer space. Then I thought, would it be like sending the Tea-Party out there
ruled by some of our favorite Tea-Baggers.
I had to rein myself in before I started thinking about this premise as a great
Flash Gorden type of strip. Maybe, the whole Republican Race wouldn’t be
the White House, but for theEmperor Ming’s throne.
However, back to Newt. The reason I drew him so easily, is that I had drawn
him so many times in the past. When he was speaker of the House, he was
the third most powerful person in the government. He is one of my favorite
face to draw.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!! FROM RANDY AND SUSANN JONES

CHATTING WITH THOREAU ABOUT TWITTER
Angela Morris commissioned an illustration for a Peter Mandel article
The Wall Street Journal. The piece was a satire with Henry David
Thoreau being introduced to Twitter. Thoreau was asked to test the
prototype of the PodPad--“the exciting new internet platform, writing
slate, security camera and baby monitor.”
Coincidentally, I found this Thoreau quote about a bluebird.
“A man’s interest in a single bluebird is worth more than a complete but
dry list of the fauna and flora of a town.” Apparently, he had a bluebird
perch on his shoulder while he was hoeing a community garden, and the
bluebird was attracting more attention than the fauna and flora underfoot.
Then Angela suggested , “Can we make the birds look digital? That
might be a nice touch.” My wife Susann Ferris Jones sometimes helps
me with photoshopping, she took the Twitter bird logo and digitized it.
I sent Angela the two versions.
